About Ruth

Ruth Spiro lives in Illinois with her husband and two daughters, who provide endless inspiration for her writing. She graduated with a BS in Advertising from the University of Illinois in 1986, and worked for advertising agencies in both broadcast production and account management. In 1990 she earned an MBA from Loyola University of Chicago, and coordinated several large-scale research studies, including a grant from the National Institutes of Health to study smoking cessation programs in the workplace.

Her articles and essays have appeared in Child, Woman’s World, Redbook, FamilyFun and Chicago Parent. Her stories have also been published in popular anthologies, notably The Right Words at the Right Time, Volume 2: Your Turn, edited by Marlo Thomas, and several Chicken Soup for the Soul titles.

She especially loves writing for children, and her picture book, Lester Fizz: Bubble Gum Artist, will be published by Dutton. This story was a winner in the Writer’s Digest 72nd Annual Writing Competition, and was named Best Contest Entry in the Kay Snow Writing Contest sponsored by the Willamette Writers in Oregon.

In response to the dozens of women who have contacted her for advice on breaking into print, Ruth developed and teaches the Writing for Moms™ program. She helps women turn their experience and insight into essays, articles and children’s stories, and also works with writers one-on-one. Several graduates of her program are now published, too.

Ruth enjoys visiting schools and speaking to writing groups. She presents a variety of programs on the writing process for both children and adults. Her personal interests include reading, cooking, yoga, and the eternal search for the perfect pair of shoes.
